Annecy 2026: Sébastien Laudenbach on 'Viva Carmen' (Carmen, l'oiseau rebelle)

Director Sébastien Laudenbach takes us inside the making of Viva Carmen, his new animated feature, which premiered at Cannes' Directors' Fortnight and is now screening at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

Inspired by the timeless myth of Carmen, the film follows a group of street children determined to protect a fiercely independent young woman whose fate is in their hands.

🏆 Directing duet Chiara Malta and Sébastien Laudenbach marvelled animation lovers with their film "Chicken for Linda!", which won the Cesar Award for the Best animated feature in 2024. 👏👏👏

This animated film, typical of the techniques used by Sébastien Laudenbach ("The Young Girl Witht Hands), tells the story of young Linda and her mother's search for a chicken to make a recipe that will remind Linda of her deceased father.

Beyond the anecdote, which leads mother and daughter to meet a whole bunch of colourful characters, this is a peculiar coming-of-age tale about adolescence and grief.

The two filmmakers recount the genesis of this film – aimed at both children and grown-ups – and its making, which led to its presentation at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, in the Acid Cannes section.
